The town of eternal green, boasting incredible Mediterranean architecture, is one of the most vivacious Montenegrin cities. Locally called the town of thousand steps, it gives every traveler a chance to experience the authentic coastal spirit.
Remains of its turbulent history are visible every step of the way. Turkish Fortress Kanli Kula, Forte Mare, and Fortress of Spain, the guardians of the city proudly stand above the city as witnesses of its rich cultural and historical heritage. The blend of architectural styles as a result of these varied occupations gives the city a picturesque and diverse appearance. It is interesting to learn about the Savina Orthodox monastery, one of the oldest in Montenegro, as well as the Kanli Kula fortress, originally built as a part of a complex system of defensive structures and was later used as a prison, just to be used for theater performances in the present, including the Kanli Kula Theater Festival.
The city also has a local library with a collection of over 5000 books, including manuscripts. It is clear that there is much to see and explore in Herceg Novi, from its historical and cultural landmarks to its natural beauty.
